Since 1992, S.-E. Fotinea is with ILSP/ATHENA R.C., working mainly on speech synthesis, gesture and Greek Sign Language (GSL) technologies. Since February 2000 she has been a member of the staff of ILSP acting as researcher on "Speech Technologies with emphasis on prosodic rules for text-to-speech synthesis" and since 2007 as Principal Researcher on "Speech and Sign Language Technologies to support people with disabilities". She received her Diploma in Electrical Eng. in 1992 and the Ph.D. in 1999 from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), School of Electrical and Computer Engineering-ECED.
She has acted as the Scientist in Charge of the national project DIANOEMA on sign language corpora creation, extraction of linguistic model for GSL to serve the needs of sign language video recognition, of the European FAST (Marie Curie) project on signal denoising and ASR in the presence of MR noise, of the ERMIS (IST)-Emotion Rich Machine Interface System and as deputy co-ordinator of the European project DICTA-SIGN (FP7-ICT) on sign language (SL) resources, linguistic modelling and technologies, such as SL synthesis & recognition and as scientist in charge of the MOBOT (FP7-ICT) project on supporting mobility and thus enforcing fitness and vitality by developing an intelligent mobility aid robot for indoor environments that provides user-centred, context-adaptive and natural support.
She participates in the COGNIMUSE national project (GSRT-ARISTEIA) on Multimodal Signal and Event Processing In Perception and Cognition and has participated in several networks on her scientific interests (ENABLE-Grundvig network of ICT supported Learning for Disabled People, COST action: IS1006 “Unraveling the grammars of European sign languages: pathways to full citizenship of deaf signers and to the protection of their linguistic heritage”, SLCN “Sign Linguistics Corpora Network”, GSRT network PERIKTIONI “Women and Science“, EFTEXNOS “Training to Computer Science and Telecommunication Assistive Technologies for People with Disabilities”).
She has worked at ILSP on several other projects as a researcher and/or coordinator (national projects PROKLISI, SYNENNOESE, EFONON, DIALOGOS and European projects MUSTUTOR, EUROMAT/SYSTRAN,etc), whereas at NTUA at European projects TMR - Advanced Signal Processing for Medical Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Spectroscopy [1998-2001] & HCM [1995-1997]. She has teaching experience in the area of Digital Signal Processing (1994-2001, NTUA) as well as instructor in several Computer Engineering and Assistive Technologies seminars (1992-today).
She has organized scientific events (special sessions, workshops, conferences) and participated in the programme committees of several others (1st Int’l Workshop on Speech and Multimodal Interaction in Assistive Environments (SMIAE-2012), 5th workshop on the Representation and Processing of Sign Languages: Interaction between corpus and lexicon, LREC-2012, 9th Int’l Gesture Workshop “Gesture in Embodied Communication and Human-Computer Interaction Workshop” (GW 2011), 4th Workshop on the Representation and Processing of Sign Languages: Corpora and Sign Language Technologies-CSLT, LREC-2010, Special session on “Sign Language Technologies”, UAHCI 2009, 3rd Workshop on the Representation and Processing of Sign Languages: Construction and Exploitation of Sign Language Corpora workshops series, LREC-2008, Special session “Deaf Users and Sign Language“, UAHCI 2007, Special session “Language Technology in the scope of Universal Access”, UAHCI 2005, Invited session Human Computer Interaction, 1st International Conference “From Scientific Computing to Computational Engineering” (IC-SCCE) 2004, 4th Int’l Training and Mobility of Researchers Symposium on “Advanced Signal Processing for Medical Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Spectroscopy”-2001, Events Manager of LREC-2000 Second International Conference on Language Resources and Evaluation, Eurospeech97, 1st Int’l Workshop on Advanced Signal Processing for Medical MRI-MRS (ASPM/MRI-MRS-1997).
She has written several scientific articles spanning the area of assistive technologies and signal processing in books and scientific refereed journals as well as international refereed conferences. She acts as a reviewer in related scientific journals (TCAS-1, IEE Proc. Vision, Image & Signal Processing , AIS) and at international conferences (LREC, HCII, EACL, GW, ACL, SMIΑE).
