The scientific support of innovative agriculture in the Region of Thraki, on 'Athena' RC agenda

26-02-2018

Last week, the rural community of the region of Thraki met in the main auditorium of the "Athena" Research Center in Xanthi at the initiative of APHRIA International, a global leader in providing patients with safe and effective medical cannabis products. The company which is based in the USA and Canada is exploring the prospect of investing on innovating agriculture in the region and establishing production facilities for the contract farming of industrial cannabis in our country.

With more than 450 participants - farmers, private companies, business consultants, municipal and regional counselors, and others - attendance exceeded all expectations and revealed the community's strong interest to be involved in innovative forms of agricultural production.

Dr Nestoras Tsirliganis, head of the "Athena" Research Center in Thrace -interviewed by the public broadcasting channel of Komotini- stated that this is a promising challenge for the Region and the Athena Research Center plans to be involved by providing scientific support on multiple levels: “We can lead and support this effort at the level of laboratory, also by organizing adequate research teams, providing scientific knowledge and conducting targeted research responding to the different needs that will emerge over time. For example, at "Athena" RC we have the technological capacity and skills to develop mechanisms and processes for controlling and monitoring agricultural production using sophisticated sensors and smart technologies and for empowering farmers with the appropriate information systems that support contract farming”.

In an era of rapid developments in the EU pharmaceutical field, Greece emerges as a pole of attraction for these kind of investments. The political will to support such initiatives, the appropriate climatic and soil conditions and the scientific infrastructure can all contribute to successful performance and turn the country into a strategic export hub in the field.

The "Athena" Research Center is expected to play a central role in this effort as it is currently a hub of technological know-how, a center of scientific and technological excellence in the region that can support the exploitation of innovative cultivation practices and participatory ventures that strengthen agricultural production.
